Speakers from Toledo State Hospital Cemetery Reclamation Committee will talk about the more than 1,900 unmarked graves in the Toledo State Hospital Cemetery and their efforts to identify them. These nameless graves have been showing up all over the country: 25,000 in Georgia, 5,000 canisters of remains found on storage shelves in Oregon, and 600 remains stored in cardboard boxes in Hawaii. These are the remains of “unknown humans” whose remains were neglected on the grounds of state psychiatric hospital. In conjunction with the presentation, an exhibit titled The Garden at St. Elizabeth’s will be on display. The exhibit is a memorial to remember these forgotten psychiatric patients and is available from February 6th-9th.
Throughout the month of February, The Museum of Disability History exhibit titled Madness in America will be displayed at the Center. The six panel display features the development and expansion of mental institutions, changes in medical care and treatment, and contributions by individuals who were recipients of mental health services.
