Yes, Day Zero. The opening ceremonies are tomorrow, but there are some qualifying events today.
Men's Slopestyle Qualifying
Even though Shaun White pulled out of the event, the United States still has three representatives. Charles Guldemond had the best time of the three, but just missed out on the top 8 to automatically qualify for the finals (Canada, however, already has punched 2 boarders through to the finals). The Americans will have another go at the semifinals on February 8th, with the medal round coming later that day.
Ladies' Slopestyle Qualifying
The USA faired better, sending Americans Jamie Anderson and Karly Shorr through to the finals in the second heat, finishing 2nd and 4th. Jessika Jenson and Ty Walker will have their go in the semis. Semis and Finals will go on 2/9.
Ladies's Moguls Qualifying
North America owned the first round of qualifying as the US and Canada took 6 of the 10 spots. USA's Hannah Kearny had the best overall score for the heat, Eliza Outtrim finished 4th for the stars and stripes. The second qualifying heat comes on 2/8.
Team Figure Skating
Yeah, I don't really know what's going on here. Apparently, the US sucked in the men's team event today, and the team pairs is still to come.
Apparently, the downhill slope was deemed a deathtrap of sorts as the women hit the course for practice. American Laurenne Ross and Italy's Verena Stuffer came off the course complaining about the angle of the last hump, but it wasn't until Italian Daniela Merighetti injured her knees while landing did they decide to do something about it.
Also, Russian officials thinks that the hotel room horror stories are simply being blown out of proportion. After all, they have surveillance video of people turning on the shower, directing at the wall, and then leaving for the day! They didn't bother to answer any follow up questions about the surveillance in the bathrooms.
Opening ceremonies are tomorrow. CBC should show it live, NBC will delay it until primetime. Maybe they'll interrupt half of it for a Ryan Seacrest interview again.
