Today in freestyle skiing were the "Ladies Aerials", which you can't say without smiling just a little bit. But no American medals, so I DONT GIVE A HOOOOOOOT
The US picked up a medal in The Craziest Freaking Sport Honestly What The Heck Are You People Thinking, also known as the Skeleton. Noelle Pikus-Pace gets the silver medal, sandwiched between Great Britan and Russia. It's the only medal the US took, but it's their 13th, bringing them in a draw with Norway for most medals (but still behind Germany and Switzerland in most golds).
The Americans were off, as they prepare to play host Russia tomorrow, a game where I'll watch with conflicted heart: obviously I'm rooting for the US, but 4 Columbus Blue Jackets are on Team Russia, including goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky. I CAN'T ROOT AGAINST YOU, BOB.
Canada did play today, and crushed Austria 6-0. Jeff Carter scored a hat trick, but still can't shake being a total jerkbag.
The US men had a shot at saving face after getting a win over Germany, in the early round, but a loss to Russia in the late round has pretty much sunk the tournament. The women got crushed by Denmark.
Deadspin had an interesting article yesterday regarding the American speed skaters: after having an absolutely phenomenal run in the Olympic qualifiers, the US is getting skunked on the racing rinks, and they seem to think a brand new suit is the problem.
This does raise the question of equipment and athletics: Remember when records were simply falling apart in the Summer Olympics? A lot of people talked about the new American swim suits as the reason why. Well, I guess you play with fire, you get burned, because equipment seemed to burn them here.
